Q: Haile, you finally got the marathon world record. What does this mean to you?
Q: ÇÏÀÏ·¹, µåµð¾î ¸¶¶óÅæ¿¡¼ ¼¼°è±â·ÏÀ» ¼ö¸³Çߴµ¥, ÀÌ´Â ´ç½Å¿¡°Ô ¾î¶² ÀǹÌÀΰ¡?
A: I'm very happy. It's very special. I've been dreaming for many years to have this record. But I'm still dreaming about running even faster. I think 2:03 is possible for me.
Q: What did you say to Paul Tergat on Sunday after breaking his record?
Q: ´ç½ÅÀÌ Æú ÅͰ«ÀÌ °¡Á³´ø ¼¼°è±â·ÏÀ» °æ½ÅÇÑ ÈÄ ÅͰ«¿¡°Ô ¹«½¼ ¸»À» Çß³ª?
A: I told him that I was sorry that I had beaten his record. I said that he should come back to Berlin next year and have a go at getting his record back.
Q: How special is it to break the world record at the marathon?
Q: ¸¶¶óÅæ¿¡¼ ¼¼°è±â·ÏÀ» ¼ö¸³ÇÑ °ÍÀº ¾ó¸¶³ª Ưº°ÇÑ °ÍÀΰ¡?
A: On Sunday when I said after the race that this is the most important of all my world records I meant it. In Ethiopia we have a strong tradition in the marathon going back to Abebe Bekila in the 1960 Olympics. Here in Ethiopia people, if they know anything about running, know the marathon, so it was important for me to break this record. Besides, I would not be a runner if it were not for Abebe Bekila.
Q: Why is the world record at the marathon different from all your other previous records?
Q: ¸¶¶óÅæ¿¡¼ ¼¼°è±â·ÏÀÌ ÀÌÀü¿¡ ±ÍÇϰ¡ ¼ö¸³ÇÑ ´Ù¸¥ (¼¼°è)±â·Ïµé°ú ¾î¶»°Ô ´Ù¸¥°¡?
A: First, the marathon is the king of distance running. Also, it is the hardest record of them all to beat. At distances shorter than the marathon, you are running just against other athletes and against the time. In the marathon you are running against the distance. You never know where you will get problems during the race. Even on Sunday I had a difficult patch from 35 to 40km, even though I still knew that I would get the record.
Q: At what point did you know that something special was happening on Sunday?
Q: ÀÏ¿äÀÏ ¾î¶² Á¡¿¡¼ Ưº°ÇÑ ÀÏ(¼¼°è±â·Ï)ÀÌ ¼ö¸³µÉ °ÍÀ̶ó°í ¿¹»óÇß³ª?
A: First, I slept well - for eight hours from 10 to 6 am. When I got up, I saw that the conditions were good. The forecast had been for dry weather but until I saw it with my own eyes I couldn't believe it. Even at 7.30, there was a dark cloud over the start, but we were happy that it didn't rain at that time.
Q: You said after the race that you weren't as confident going into this marathon. Why was that?
Q: ´ëȸÈÄ À̹ø ¸¶¶óÅæ Âü°¡¿¡ ±×´ÙÁö ÀÚ½ÅÀÌ ¾ø¾ú´Ù°í Çߴµ¥.. ¿Ö ±×·¨³ª?
A: That was partly because of the rain on the day before the race. I don't like it when it's wet - it doesn't suit my style of running. Also, I had some asthma problems in the build up to the race, which have been with me for about 6-7 years. My breathing was not good for the first 15km, but from 20km onwards I started to feel good and knew that I could do something special.
Q: How do you explain your performance in Berlin last Sunday?
Q: Áö³ ÀÏ¿äÀÏ º£¸¦¸°¸¶¶óÅæ¿¡¼ÀÇ ¼ºÀûÀº ¾î¶»°Ô ¼³¸íÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ³ª?
A: I knew that I was in really good shape. I had trained hard and I'm doing more endurance work now. The course in Berlin is really good. Last year I made the mistake of running too fast early on, whereas this year I stayed behind the pacemakers until 30km. Rodgers Rop and Eshetu Wondimu did a great job for me in setting the pace until that point. The spectators were fantastic. It seemed like there were twice as many spectators as last year. Of course I also had a bit of luck. It rained for most of Saturday and on Sunday after the race - but during the race it was dry.
Q: So lots of cause for celebration¡¦?
Q: ´ç¿¬È÷ ¸¹Àº ÃàÇϵµ...?
A: Yes, of course. Here in Ethiopia we like to celebrate and since returning home many people have called me to congratulate me on my race. But one thing I want to tell you: there will be faster times in the future, and I am still trying to run faster.
Q: How will you prepare for Beijing?
Q: º£ÀÌ¡(¿Ã¸²ÇÈ)Àº ¾î¶»°Ô ÁغñÇÒ ¿¹Á¤Àΰ¡?
A: Right now, I haven't got any fixed plans. I need to assess my plans and all possible options for training. I want to prepare in a special way for Beijing. I know that the humidity there can be a problem. But that is next year, and before then I have lots of training and other races to run.
